I used to wonder about those two ... which one is the real person, and which is their sock-puppet?

(and separate is definitely hard to spell!)

I had trouble with those two too.
I taught myself - SepARate. We ARE separated (picture a couple standing apart)
And deFINITE. I will stay convinced unto infinity (picture a stubborn man, arms crossed, sure he is right)

Silly, but it worked for me.
Calendar was another one.
But I remember that just by saying it Cal-n-DAR in my head.

I always connect "separate" with a "paring" knife.

I remember "definite" by thinking that if something is "definite" it has "FINITE" limits. Funny the tricks we use to help ourselves out.

Talking

Well, I for one categorically deny whatever rumor there may be.

Tee Dump (oblique and gratuitous Boston Harbor reference) and I are not hand-in-sock; we're a hypergolic mixture.

"Separate" is annoyingly elusive, isn't it? I tell myself two A's, two E's. That primary-school geographical spelling bugbear Mississippi yields to a rhythmic little dactylic chant: "Em I ess ess I ess ess I pee pee I."

And "weird" of course is weird. Who'd've thought? "Seize" remains unexplained...

Well, because if it were "sieze" it would rhyme with "sieve," right?
