My parents were Republicans, my brother has been holding public office as a Republican for 19 years, my home town is predominately Republican, the town I live in is predominantly Republican, some of my friends are Republicans, they're not bad people.... just misguided.

Former ACLU Chapter President Arrested for Child Pornography
Feb. 23, 2007 ABC News Federal agents arrested Charles Rust-Tierney, the former president of the Virginia chapter of the ACLU, Friday in Arlington for allegedly possessing child pornography. According to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, Rust-Tierney allegedly used his e-mail address and credit card to subscribe to and access a child pornography website. The complaint states that federal investigations into child pornography websites revealed that “Charles Rust-Tierney has subscribed to multiple child pornography website over a period of years.” As recently as last October, the complaint alleges, “Rust-Tierney purchased access to a group of hardcore commercial child pornography websites.” Since the ACLU thinks that child pornography should be legal, it is not surprising to read that it is against making it a felony to advertise, sell, purchase, barter, exchange, give, or receive child pornography. It is particularly distressed about the prohibition on advertisement, arguing that “the law cannot expect every publisher to decode every advertisment for some hidden and sinister meaning,” as if it took a technician-armed with a special decoding device-to ferret out pictures of children ludely exhibiting their genitals. Quote from Twilight Of Liberty Complaint Alleges Access to Graphic Material Rust-Tierney admitted to investigators that he had downloaded videos and images from child pornography websites onto CD-ROMs, according to the complaint. Dan Riehl at Riehl World View, says: “Hmm. Just doing research, no doubt.” The videos described in the complaint depict graphic forcible intercourse with prepubescent females. One if the girls is described in court documents as being “seen and heard crying”, another is described as being “bound by rope.” The investigation is being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and the Arlington County Police as part of the Northern Virginia and District of Columbia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Rust-Tierney made an initial appearance in a federal court in Alexandria, VA, Friday. He is being detained pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 28. Youth Coach, Argued Against Restricting Public Internet Rust Tierney coaches various youth sports teams in and around Arlington, Virginia, according to court documents. In the past, Rust-Tierney had argued against restricting Internet access in public libraries in Virginia, writing, “Recognizing that individuals will continue to behave responsibly and appropriately while in the library, the default should be maximum, unrestricted access to the valuable resources of the Internet.”

Some will nod sagely, saying that this explains a lot.
Meanwhile, I'd suggest to the ACLU that to be truly a civil rights organization, they should quit neglecting defense of Second Amendment cases. No reason for them to continue ignoring this front of civil liberties just because they've been doing it since about the nineteen-sixties. |

I'm a liberal who lives in Arlington, so you might think that I've heard of this guy, but I haven't. Good job though Merc, finding a liberal involved in a sex scandal, even if it is a C or D list liberal who doesn't hold office.

It says "former president " but not when. Kind of like saying a former first grader.

That is what they'll tell you, yes.
But it's an excuse. They could stop being disingenuous with just a couple of token case efforts annually, even in cooperation with NRA's legal aid -- but you don't see even that much. Second Amendment activists like author Neil Schulman have found active hostility to supporting gun rights within the ACLU, which annoys those who account gun rights as human rights. The American Some-Civil-Liberties Union? Oh, puh-leeze, ACLU boys.

The ACLU can take up gun rights when the NRA helps defend "Bong hits for Jesus".

And since the NRA is free to concentrate it's vast resources on a single issue, the ACLU is justified in dealing with everything else.
Criminal Justice Death Penalty Disability Rights Drug Policy Free Speech HIV/AIDS Immigrants' Rights Human Rights Lesbian & Gay Rights National Security Police Practices Prisoners' Rights Privacy & Technology Racial Justice Religion and Belief Reproductive Freedom Rights of the Poor Safe and Free StandUp/Youth Voting Rights Women's Rights Also, "2nd Amendment" rights might be mixed in with a lot of these issues. You can't say that the ACLU hasn't had to bring the 2nd amendment into any of the cases they argue.

The NRA is a private club... they can choose to do as they wish.
