By locking it I meant making a password that wouldn't let unauthorized users to use your computer.

If you're associated with a college, could you get the IT guys to come and help you set up some extra security measures?

Most IT departments wouldn't touch this one with a 10 ft pole. (We generally have enough to do keeping computers the college actually owns up and running. On campuses where IT will touch student-owned computers--and there are many where they just won't--they usually have well-defined areas of what they will and won't do to them.)

No, I'm savvy enough I don't need IT help. I just didn't expect him to let his friends fuck around. I just want him to own up, I mean I caught him lieing. When you're caught don't fuck it up even more just admit that shit and accept the consequences that follow; like losing respect and trust.

I'm with the let it slide crowd, Don't think about evening-up the score. Don't forget either. I'd set my cam to motion detect until I got to know what to expect of this guy, unless there are specific rules forbidding it. I'm not sure what right to privacy you can expect from a room mate. You may also want to leave a papaer trail as in making a formal complaint with your RA just incase things get worse.
finally, I'd be up front with him as far as YOUR expectations of privacy are concerned and promise him you will report him (again) to the school.

people can suck but he may respond to your setting limits.

DESKTOP implies Windows? Try this:

Start -- Control Panel -- User Accounts -- Advanced -- Secure Logon. That brings you to here: Check the little box and you prevent ALL access to the computer without a login name and password. You should physically lock your computer too. I love this one.

A university that has usage limits on the network? That's madness. What are you paying in 'technology fees', out of curiosity?

It's horrible living with people you can't trust. Especially when you've gone out of your way to be fair to him.

I wouldn't film him though. That's a much bigger breach of trust than what he did to you. And what would you do if you saw something you weren't happy with? You'd have to confront him all over again - if he lies when you have proof you can show him, he's definitely going to lie if you have caught him in a clandestine way. Also it's like listening at doors or reading other people's diaries - you always end up findong out something you'd rather not know!

Fingers crossed he just didn't think through the whole respect issue and this has given him a wake up call. He's a poor weaselly thing for not holding his hands up though.

This is probably RIAA blowback.

He said "my bad," which is an acknowledgment that he shouldn't have done it and that it was a mistake. It's a pretty lame apology, and he sounds like a moron, but he did admit he was wrong. I wouldn't be very trusting with him from now on, but I would move on and try to put it behind you. Just password protect your PC.

Dude that'd be just fine. I told him at the beginning of the year, hey eat my food please my mom packed me too much (I'm a newbie freshman) and yeah go ahead if you want, sin in my butterfly chair, let your girlfriend sit in it, please, sure I'll print out your paper (since I have a printer and he doesn't) but I mean I just wanted some decent respect. And what happened this weekend was not respect but yes, I'm over it, I saw him just now like 5 minutes ago, the first time we've seen each other since Saturday (he didn't come home yesterday) and we didn't address anything. So yeah, it's behind me, but I have new opinions that have formed.

Now that's why you shouldn't be filming him
