I don't know where your friends are from, but I vote for
Chinatown. Philadelphia's is small compared to New York or San Francisco, but there is a lot there and some of it is exotic, especially to people who don't live near a large Asian community.
Some trendier stuff has been happening in the past few years, they even have a place for dancing.
