Nerdgasm: pendulum waves

A little bit of physics, a little bit of maths, and ... whoooaaahh, duuuuude!

Mostly it is just about the period of a given pendulum being a function of it's length, but invariant over the amplitude of the swing, appropriately iterated over monotonically increasing lengths.

I think I see the "period three implies chaos" law at work here too.

If this doesn't lure Pie back, nothing will.

There is a pretty good explanation at the Youtube page.

Oh, that's cool.

That made me dizzy.

Now I can't go to work.

I'm blaming the Cellar.

That, or the bad meat.

Which I'll blame on the Cellar, also.

If you're really high, and/or unfocus your eyes, after it looks like a snake it just looks like it's spinning not penduluming. it gets REALLY weird when you try to watch the individual balls.

Ibram!

I had the same thought, but resisted !

How's it hanging, man? Hopefully not swinging like those pendulums, that could give you some bruises.
Spexxvet • Oct 19, 2011 10:54 am
I wonder if it would look different with the balls painted different colors.
Gravdigr • Oct 19, 2011 1:54 pm
Well, that certainly took some balls.

That's completely awesome. Gotta say though, I read the intro lines of the post to the tune of Mambo No.5.
