Cell Phone Internet Access

Crimson Ghost • Sep 26, 2011 1:19 am
Ok, here's a question for my fellow Cellar Dwellers -

I'm considering dropping my landline and my dial-up internet access.
(Yup, me. I'm the one. I'm the reason AT&T has to keep the dial-up infrastructure going... Bite me.)
Anyway, if I do this, I'll be browsing only on my cellphone.
Have any of you done this, and what are the pros and cons of this decision?

Inquiring minds want to know....

Further information -
I have an unlimited text and data plan, and I'll be saving about $70 a month without the landline and home internet.

if you have 4g go for it. 3G is like DSL

I'm still on 3G, but considering after Hurricane Irene, I was connecting at the BLAZING speed of 4200k, for 2 FRIGGING WEEKS, I figured I needed to do something.

Yup, you read that right.
Your humble narrator was connecting at 1/3 the speed of the internet in 1990!!!
WHOO HOO! I was hoping whiplash wasn't going to set in!
I was getting lapped by tortoises using walkers!
Sloths fuck faster than that!
From starting the Connection Manager to actually seeing the ATT.net splash page, I could eat a 5 course meal!

Of course, your mileage may vary....

Verizon FIOS generally starts at $50/month and includes a landline and you get a decent router for that price too.

Yeah, I'm looking into FIOS and Cablevision.

The biggest problem with surfing on the phone is limitations of the phone's hardware and OS. Maybe making your phone a wifi connection to a laptop would work.

But if FIOS is available, that's much better.

I was just trying to surf the Cellar on my phone a moment ago, and it was very unreliable. I had to take the battery out to get it to reboot before I could make the connection. But sometimes it works. MY FIOS at home is a million times better.

Haven't had the phone lock up on the Cellar.
Yet.
I just won't touch the monkey....

you need a phone that can be a mobile hotspot.

virgin mobile has a sweeeet deal, unlimited text unlimited data and 300 minutes of voice for 35 bucks a month.

and the phone can be a hotspot.
