Above and Beyond

People complain a lot when things fail, but there are times when technology exceeds it design parameters or finds a purpose well outside it's specifications. (note: check out the link for the pictures, which are awesome)

We get a lot of complaints from readers about their HP computers and the company's customer service. But one person who won't be complaining is the U.S. soldier whose HP notebook took six bullets intended for him.
The soldier who sent these images to HP was stationed in Afghanistan when he came under enemy fire. Two bullets hit his shoulder but the other six bullets that hit him were stopped by the notebook in his backpack.

Of course, if it takes 6 bullets to get the prompt attention of HP customer service, I'll take my chances with the on-hold music.

Another example would be the Mars Rover, which lasted 6 years past it's original mission threshold.

Yikes.

Although this is funny, and true about HP....I call BS.

Could it be the HP was up against a kevlar vest?

Yea, I could see if it was up against plates.

- I've seen dudes take rounds...one, two max on their plates. not a grouping like that. Shouldn't be standing still long enough to take 4-6 rounds in a close group like that.

- Why would a guy be carrying his laptop? We carry extra water, extra rounds, extra rounds, extra rounds, socks, blow out kit, extra water. It doesn't make sense to me that he would be carrying his lap top.

Unless he is a Pogue. Then maybe I could see this.

I don't know anything about the military logistics of it, but Mythbusters did an episode demonstrating that laptops are, in fact, generally bulletproof as long as you're shooting from more than 3-4 feet away.

I'm guessing the laptop and photos were shot in Texas, Kentucky, or Paragould, Arkansas

Sometimes what is necessary is also obvious.

Lots of dwellars have guns, and quite a few have discrete places to 'practice' with them.

This being 2011, pretty much everyone must have an old defunct laptop lying around.

Who wants to do the experiment?

Just be sure to set up some kind of test device between the laptop and the backstop (maybe a phone book?) to see if the bullets pass right through or not.

Well, right now I have a .22 which is fairly small caliber and I have a 5th Gen ipod and scalewise that would probably be close but I don't really want to shoot my ipod, so no.

I think I have a defunct old 5th gen ipod video to donate to the cause.

I guess it would be best to start small calibre and work up, taking a photo each time.
