when launching certain programs others try to install

When I launch certain applications, just now it was Duplicate Cleaner, I get an install wizard pop-up telling me that quickbooks is trying to install or Microsoft Office is trying to install. I just keep hitting cancel until the desired application launches. WTF is up with that?

Which virus checker do you use and what does it say?
squirell nutkin • Sep 13, 2010 11:24 am
I use kaspersky and it says everything is peachy.

Automatic updates, you're refusing, that keep accumulating?
squirell nutkin • Sep 13, 2010 2:02 pm
hmm. I just started an object scan and it seems things are far from peachy. I'm not sure how that all happened, but it seems like my hard drive is actually a crack house.
:(

That's bad, but it may attract some crack ho's. :o

You figure that out on your own? :D

A system component, Microsoft Installer, is screwed up.

What version of Windows do you have?
squirell nutkin • Sep 14, 2010 12:08 pm
Hi mbpark,
I'm running XP. Can I re-install MS Installer? (that seems ironic) How does it get screwed up?
mbpark • Sep 14, 2010 12:14 pm
Sure,

Download it from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/6/1/261fca42-22c0-4f91-9451-0e0f2e08356d/WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

Microsoft Installer relies on an internal database, and a lot of files stored in C:\windows\installer. Sometimes the DB gets corrupt in older versions of the product.

You perhaps by chance didn't delete any of those files, did you? :)

Anything is possible. Sometimes I get deletion happy, followed by deletion sad.

You'll be deletion sad.

How did the installer work?
squirell nutkin • Sep 15, 2010 12:13 am
Well, it installed ok and I just tried to launch Duplicate cleaner and it fired right up. So, many thanks to you.
mbpark • Sep 15, 2010 2:20 am
you're welcome.

microsoft's installers do suck, but they work most of the time.
