Beta test my new URL shortener

Undertoad • Jul 2, 2010 3:18 pm
As a service to you, the Cellar community, I have created an URL shortener.

http://cllr.me

It is a simple device that converts long URLs such as ...

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2010/07/june-unemployment-rate-declines-to-95/59101/

... into shorter URLs that you can move around more easily:

http://cllr.me/UAk

I hope to develop more such tools for the Cellar community, so that we can all share and enjoy.
Flint • Jul 2, 2010 3:21 pm
Neat! It links to an article about unemployed web developers.
glatt • Jul 2, 2010 3:38 pm
So did the Cellar move from Philly to Montenegro?
Pete Zicato • Jul 2, 2010 3:59 pm
Oh look it works.
Shawnee123 • Jul 2, 2010 4:01 pm
How is this different than just putting the link into the words by highlighting and using the little eyecon (that was a typo but too funny to change) of the worldy looking thing and eyeglasses?

If you hover over the linked text with your cursor, you can see in the corner of the browser what the link is pointing to. With this new tool, it won't show you what the tiny url is pointing at. In other words, it's easier to rickroll someone with this new tool.

Bonus
glatt • Jul 2, 2010 4:22 pm
Indeed it is.
fargon • Jul 2, 2010 4:23 pm
Hooray for the Undertoad it works, dude your awesome!
Shawnee123 • Jul 2, 2010 4:25 pm
Thanks for the explanation. :)

It DOES work!
glatt • Jul 2, 2010 4:34 pm
This: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=lost+city+of+z&x=0&y=0

becomes this: http://cllr.me/mY4
Flint • Jul 2, 2010 4:40 pm
It only took half an hour for UT's cool invention to be exploited as a Rickroll generator... Keep up the good work, Cellar.
BigV • Jul 2, 2010 4:43 pm
More obfuscation is not an improvement. Undetectable rickrolls are the least of my complaints, though annoying enough. I like to see where I'm going. Hyperlinks could always have been made as short as desired. I don't see the advantage here.
Shawnee123 • Jul 2, 2010 4:45 pm
So don't click on them. Who cares?

I love the FAQs. Now go BAQ.

This is awesome!

Shawnee123 • Jul 2, 2010 4:54 pm
I KNOW!
Undertoad • Jul 2, 2010 5:25 pm
Sometimes there is a need. This is particularly true on Twitter, where you're limited to 140 characters. And it's unique, because with cllr.me, you know that you can trust the service, cos it's me.
squirell nutkin • Jul 2, 2010 5:26 pm
Awesome: http://cllr.me/RyZ

Not exactly shorter, but still cool as hell. ;)
BigV • Jul 2, 2010 5:35 pm
I see your point, UT. I should have been more specific, that I don't see the need in cellar posts.

good tool for tweets tho.
Cicero • Jul 2, 2010 5:41 pm
Good Job UT! Love it! Love it! Love it! :)

I can't believe it took about 2 seconds for me to fall for the rick roll again. :(

can you put a link to it down there with the cookies and chat link and stuff?

edit: yes you can...

...duh

edit edit: can you make it open a new tab/window when you click it?
HugeC • Jul 3, 2010 12:14 pm
I can't believe what a dickhole I am!
PikerV • Jul 3, 2010 12:54 pm
So what use is this? Where is the improvement? I'm the only person allowed to cause brief and mysterious diversions.
lumberjim • Jul 3, 2010 1:58 pm
I like the logo-ey thing too, tone.

i lolled at BAQ
Undertoad • Jul 3, 2010 2:01 pm
Thanks man! I'm getting better at design as I get older. Still can't draw for shit though.

go piss up a rope, ya turd burgular.
classicman • Jul 5, 2010 4:27 pm
I think its cool in the right application. I do, however, like to see where a link is going before I go there. I've had too many problems with this computer and don't need the aggravation.
On the other hand, I can typically tell which links I can trust based upon who is posting them.

I don't tweet, so I have no idea about that.
Happy Monkey • Jul 6, 2010 1:23 pm
There could be a slightly less short URL shortener that includes the top level of the URL; so this page could, for example, become http://shorten.er/cellar.org.xqv

I don't know whether this would actually have any use, as hosts can be arbitrarily long.
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 7, 2010 12:50 am
I don't click links that don't show where I'm going, to many fucking assholes that think they're funny, but they're just a waste of time.
gvidas • Apr 26, 2016 11:46 pm
I'm too lazy and not-malicious to confirm this myself, but the cllr.me hash being so much shorter, and the community it serves being so much more narrow, it seems especially ripe for something like this:

TL;DR: short URLs produced by bit.ly, goo.gl, and similar services are so short that they can be scanned by brute force. Our scan discovered a large number of Microsoft OneDrive accounts with private documents. Many of these accounts are unlocked and allow anyone to inject malware that will be automatically downloaded to users’ devices. We also discovered many driving directions that reveal sensitive information for identifiable individuals, including their visits to specialized medical facilities, prisons, and adult establishments.

xoxoxoBruce • Apr 27, 2016 12:13 am
Like UT said, the cloud is just someone else's computer.
Undertoad • Jun 20, 2016 9:16 pm
cllr.me had to go. It was being taken over by people looking to redirect for evil spammy/porny purposes.
Gravdigr • Jun 21, 2016 1:09 pm
So long cllr.me, we hardly knew ye.

:blackr:
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 21, 2016 1:18 pm
Hey now, you say porny purposes like it's a bad thing. :haha:
Undertoad • Jun 21, 2016 1:25 pm
I think a lot of it was getting around Facebook bans on links from certain domain names. I didn't investigate it too far. But there were about 20000 links from two domains.
