Crackberry Bold is chock full of awesomeness.

Of course the battery pull resets are somewhat tedious, but you only have to do it like once a month. There's probably some software-related cure that I haven't bothered to look up.

The Curve has been joy. The Blackberry trackball is a great way to get around. Touch is oh-wow until you need precision -- that's my stance, and I'm sticking with it. I love its actual keyboard. Gmail integration is awesome, as is Google Search, Maps. The phone jack is (the correct) 3.5mm, the charging/connecting is (the correct) mini-USB. a really cool desktop charging cradle is $19.95 at crackberry.com where you can also find a free battery pull app called "QuickPull Free". Actually you could browse the whole Crackberry "free" section to see what software you can get for nothing: Pandora...

Gee, I have a basic Motorola V-series phone. Never used it for internet, games, or anything else save the alarm clock function. I do use a Blue Parrot headset, but that's all. I send less than five texts a year. It's a PHONE people!

I have all the other gadgets that do what I need better...laptop, iPod, alarm clock etc.

My blackberry is about 3 years old. It looks very ugly. Nothing stylish about it at all, but I love the qwerty keyboard. I love it that the screen is recessed by a millimeter or two, which keeps it from getting all scratched up like my iPod. It's got the thumb wheel on the side, which works well. It's not tiny, but it's small enough to keep permanently in my pocket.

I wish it had a camera.

Motorola Krave

Eh, I don't know. Texting isn't too easy...it's like the timing is off from one "button" to another, and when you turn it sideways to get the keyboard the "buttons" are just too small.

I'm keeping my Verizon Razr V3. Mrs. Levy was having some issues with hers and recently picked up a Samsung freebie. I tried one and returned it. My Razr has a metal case, a micro-SD slot, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. This is all I require of a phone at the moment, since I don't want to upgrade to a smartphone yet until a clear winner emerges and I decide the $30 month is worth it.

Free free, or free with a data plan free? How much more does it cost than a razr over 2 years? I'm opposed to paying more since either of us can/do sit in front of a pc whenever we want to play with google or email.

DanaC • Nov 6, 2009 6:54 pm
Currently I have a Motorola Razr. I hate it. But it was free. My old (and much loved) Nokia was just being too much of a pain: the battery wouldn't hold a charge, and getting hold of a new battery for it was proving difficult. So, given i was always difficult to get hold of, a friend of mine gave me her old phone (she was upgrading).

I hate that its menu systems are counter intuitive (options always seem to be reversed to me. So, the delete option appears on the left instead of the right.) I hate that its keys are fiddly. I don't like all those buttons on its side. It has a camera I neither need nor use. *shrugs* But it was given freely and it takes and makes calls and messages.

By choice I'd go for another Nokia. My last one looked not dissimilar to Monnie's phone in the picture she posted. The great thing about Nokias, at least the old ones, I know very little bout the newer shinier models, was that they were built to last and last. The one I had prior to my last one got run over by a car and still worked, other than having no screen. Couldn't send or read messages on it, but could still use it for phone calls. Used that phone for months after its car accident.

I like gadgets. I love my i-pod. I love my laptop and my swanky new superslim digi camera. But I like my phones simple. I don;t need it to play music, or to be able to take beautiful pictures. I just need it to take and receive calls and messages and have an alarm and calendar function. That's it. The only other attribute i need in a phone is for it to be sturdy and able to handle ill-treatment without having a screaming hissy fit and refusing to work.
jinx • Nov 6, 2009 7:03 pm
I like my Razr, but it's showing it's age. The camera broke and that's the one "extra" that I actually want - so I want my new phone to have a good camera. The only other things I use/need would be the phone part and the scrabble game. If I can get that done for considerably less than the costs of a nice caribbean vacation every year, I'm sold.
Cloud • Nov 6, 2009 7:15 pm
Re: comparison in post #10: my iphone plan is about $1,000 less than what they show there (not including taxes, but I'm sure taxes aren't included there either).

For people who live on the 'net, as we do, a smartphone isn't a toy at all. Just as an example, it saved my sanity while I was in the hospital, by using the white noise generator application.
jinx • Nov 6, 2009 7:27 pm
I have a white noise machine.
DanaC • Nov 6, 2009 7:47 pm
wtf is a white noise generator app? or indeed a white noise machine? Why would one want to generate white noise? I am lost.
jinx • Nov 6, 2009 7:50 pm
Well it's not technically white noise... I have my machine set to 'crickets' most of the time. It drowns out the sound of snoring and/or silence so I can sleep.
Cloud • Nov 6, 2009 8:09 pm
I have a white noise machine at my bedside, and really prefer not to sleep without it. White noise (and other kinds of masking noises technically described with various colors) is like a fan--it provides a stable background noise which masks noises and distractions.

Selene was an early adopter of the Blackjack. She's had it three years, giving it hard use all the way. She's lost the back of it and the multifunction charger/data port is pretty much shot, so she's going for a new smartphone. I think she's got her heart set on the iPhone 3GS. She's played with my 3G for awhile now, and I'm pretty happy with it.

All of these smart phones just about kill you as far as monthly charges, though. Having portable data in the palm of your hand is *not* cheap. I pay nearly three times what my kids pay for their unlimited talk minutes, unlimited text and MMS messaging - $45 for them to $125 for me. My phone does lots of stuff theirs don't, but wow. Expensive.

That said, I've used the GPS and mapping function three times in the past two evenings, I use Twitter and Facebook pretty much daily, I've browsed up tons of useful info while out and about via the voice activated Google Search. So, yeah, it's expensive, but at this point I'd feel like I'd lost a limb if I had to be without it.

Non-data plan phone choices are limited with verizon (and the lady at the store gave different choices than the man on the phone), but better than att at least, my sis just got a new phone there and there was only 1 option.

A review of the env3 on amazon says
Worse, there is no way to transfer photos or videos to or from this phone with a USB cable. If you pay for a data plan, this is no trouble, since you can email them to yourself or post them to a website. But otherwise, you're stuck. There is a laborious process by which you can upload pictures from your computer onto a Verizon webpage, then send them as picture messages to your phone, but the picture quality is terrible, and this still doesn't get photos from your phone to your computer. It ought to work just like a camera -- plug the cord into your computer and transfer the pics -- but it doesn't. The only reason for this that I can imagine is that Verizon wants you to pay extra for a data plan, which just seems like a dirty trick.

If true, that's a huge concern... I can send a pic from my razr to my email now, why would that change? Is it about the phone or the provider? <clueless>

If you're sending a pic from your razr to your phone now, then I'd guess you already have a data plan and this would not be a problem.

I opted out of the data plan. But with my phone you can hook up the phone to a usb cable to the computer and just copy the pics from phone to computer.

No, until last night we had almost the most basic Verizon fam plan available - not even free texting. I could send pics like a text though, to another phone or my email.

But last night we impulse-bought 4 Crackberries (curve) with unlimited data plans from Sprint. It's like $20/mo more than we're paying now and the phones were BOGO/$50. I'm happy.

Yay! It's an awesome phone. Now... pay more money!

I love the charging cradle at the accessories store at crackberry.com. It's silver and has a lit BB symbol at the bottom. Worth the $19.99 to always have your phone charging, sitting upright at your desk.

The best bluetooth headsets I have found are from Plantronics. I tried many back when I had a job, and settled on the Voyager 520. Sure it's more expensive than many you can get... but it's comfortable, easy to slip on, and sounds good.
