Every time I click on a mail link, I get:
I see the problem. That OK button doesn't work. at all.
Step 1: get a Gmail account.
Step 1a: use it as your primary email address.
Step 2: get the Google Toolbar.
Step 3: Google Toolbar Settings -> Options -> More -> Send With Gmail
This is the ideal solution especially if you do not use Gmail as your primary email address, because it will correct your problem of not using Gmail as your primary email address.
Alternate solution: use Firefox 3, which is in beta testing, soon to be released.

Well then there's your problem right there. You have to use it.
I've found the best way to use email is to not use Outlook Express. Every time I or several of my friends have used it, viruses and problems start happening. I've also never found it user friendly. I use Juno and Yahoo, along with Firefox, and haven't had any problems.
Are you assuming I use OE?
Only assuming that because you're having problems. I'm not really computer literate, just more than most of my friends. Anytime one of them has a problem with email, I find it's usually OE that is at fault. Di'n't mean no offense.:)
spud is correct. It doesn't really need to be Outlook Express. Outlook Regular is just as sucky.
Around these parts almost everybody has encountered the dreaded "Unknown Error", which happens when you have an Outlook data file over 2GB.
That's the whole error message: "Unknown Error". It tells you that, for many years, no programmer at Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to test why the program can't open the main file where it keeps every email you send or receive.
"Unknown Error". Fuck them! It's as bad as "PC LOAD LETTER", except that Microsoft had an entire screen for their error message, while HP only had a single line of LED characters. Oh yes and "PC LOAD LETTER" was written in the 80s when major devices didn't necessary have good error messages. The last Outlook with that error message was 2003.

Couldn't agree more for personal use. Most corporations are still using Outlook, though.

IIRC this is a registry thing in windows. Somewhere in your Thunderbird options there will be an entry like "Make Thunderbird your default mail program". I think if you make sure that is checked and click ok, it should make the appropriate registry entries.
