Smart Cars

I had not heard of these until I went to the UK. They are pretty cool for simple commuting purposes, I don't think I would want to go on a long trip in one, but if you lived in a city they might be very practical. Now they are coming to the USA.

I love the smart cars. The US seriously needs them here. They are much better than hybrids, in my humble opinion.

There's a video floating around on the web where a car show smashes one of them into a concrete wall at 50 or 60 miles an hour. The car performs beautifully, crumpling where it should, and preserving the integrity of the passenger compartment. The door even opens afterwards.

These are very good cars.

I just can't imagine driving on some 600 mile trip in them on the highway. I want to test drive one.

I want to test drive one too. I've never been in one. But I've peered closely in the windows. There's a surprising amount of room inside, since it's a two seater. Also the seat configuration has the passenger a few inches behind the driver, which gives both more elbow room.

I've sat in one! I'm tall and there was plenty of room.
They're designed for short journeys, and there are plenty of short journeys that are not urban. I think it'd be ideally suited to my daily run of 15 miles out and back, and I live in a very rural area. The only problem, so far as my requirements are, is that I'd not be able to get my tuba in the back!
