Cool Possessed CDR Drive

Here's a fun one to gnaw on.

Before I do a complete system restore (which needs done anyway), I'd like to figure out what the heck is going on with a CDR drive in a system I'm working on.

When the system boots, the CDR starts opening and closing on its own. Nothing is in the drive, and as far as I can tell, there is nothing trying to send information to the drive to be written. We've run a virus scan, spy ware scans, and various system scans, and nothing stops the constant 'click whir' of the drive.

Any ideas?

The system is currently on a not so legal version of WinXP pro - I'm in the process of trying to back the system up to convert to a legally purchased copy of WinXP Home (I didn't buy it, nor did I recommend it). That's a topic of a whole other thread.

Thanks.
