Elliott Smith dies, aged 34

Wow, this is shocking.
Suicide. A knife wound? Ouch. I don't think he had any children, or I hope not.

He came out of the grunge movement of the early '90s as a member of Heatmiser. As a solo artist, he was not "grungy" though. I think he got the most mainstream recognition for having a song on the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting ("Miss Misery").

He was a very gifted songwriter and had a beautiful voice, too.

He had more than one song on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, and all of them were good (and used superbly on the film). I read about this the other day (yesterday? I dunno). Pretty sucky indeed.
