How to get AVI files to play properly on PS3

This is kinda entertainment/kinda tech, so...

I have some avi files that I want to put onto a DVD, then watch on my PS3. The problem is that PS3 only uses certain codecs, and apparently my files aren't encoded properly. The problem is that I'm seeing so many solutions, some contradictory. I'm just trying to figure out the simplest/easiest way to do what seems so simple.

TIA.
