Drama

The woman and I are fortunate to live in an area where there is little crime...or anything else for that matter. Every now and then though, there is some little "snippet" of action that occurs, the most serious being a young girl that drowned in our complex's pool in June.

As I was sitting here checking out the Cellar tonight, I heard a screech and a loud crash just outside my living room window. I figured it was a car accident...it's happened before. I go out on the balcony to see what's going on, and I hear screaming. I can't see too well because the foliage of the tree obstructs our view of the street during this time of year. I go back in the apartment for a moment, throw some shoes on (as I plan to head downstairs to see what's up), then go back out on the balcony as I hear more screaming. I look down and see my first floor neighbor running towards the scene...at this point, I headed outside.

As I walk onto the street, I see that a Blazer has run into a smaller car along the north side of the street...it looked like the Blazer had crossed the yellow line and hit a parked car. About 30 or more people are gathered around the Blazer, trying to push it back. As I head over to help out, I hear the screams of a child...I see a 7 or 8 year old child pinned between the two vehicles. Everyone moves quickly to push the vehicle back...there's no more room around the Blazer, so I stand just behind the pushers, in case more help is needed. The police, fire trucks, and ambulance arrive quickly. The boy is in pain, but still conscious...fortunately for him, the closest hospital (Frankford-Torresdale) is right up the street.

Few seemed to know what exactly happened, and I didn't think it my business to be snooping too much. From the bits and pieces I gathered, and from what I could determine, another car got a flat tire, something happened with this car, causing the Blazer to swerve to the other side of the street, and a child happened to be standing in front of a parked car. The car with the flat tire apparently sped away, sparks trailing behind as they were driving on the rim at that point. Police are still on the scene, and a chopper is still flying around my complex as I type.

Hopefully that child will be fine, and if this car with the flat tire caused the accident, hopefully they'll catch him. You see this sort of thing on television...but to see it in front of you is another story. I'd like to think that having so many people around (there are about 500 apartments along my street) and the close proximity of the police and fire departments helped in this situation, and will hopefully result in a happy ending.

Action News sez:

The 11 year old is in guarded condition. Dude chased the guy up the street but couldn't keep up. A woman was hysterical for the TV cameras. Another witness got the license plate number of the departing car, cops went to the dude's home and the dude was there in his garage, sitting in his car, just sitting there. Pieces of his car were falling off.

Boy's father says he will be OK.

Channel 6 led with this even though there was a woman arrested at the airport for flying from Atlanta to Philly with a 357 Magnum. 3 and 10 led with the airport story.

Update

Yeah, I saw that too...I normally watch 10, but turned on 6 b/c I figured it most likely to be on there...I was surprised that it was the lead story. The Cavalier (car that caused the accident) hit the parked car, the Blazer was parked the opposite way in front of it, and the child happened to be in between those two. He suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs.

Shit...they are right out in front of my balcony...I should have looked before the news came on to see who was out there. Someone was bound to call the media.

Dude, what's up with "dude"?

It's a Seventies' thing--you wouldn't understand. :-)

Really messed me up the first time my youngest daughter prefixed an exclamation to me with it...until I figured out that for her it carries no gender attribution whatsoever. She's 14.

A link to the story. From what I heard this morning, alcohol was involved.

You know, after reading that article, I thought of something...

The apparent perp's address is listed in the article...it was also mentioned in the story last night.

I don't know if that was such a good idea on the part of 6ABC. When it was determined what kind of car left the scene last night, several people took off after it in a rage. I'd hate to see someone with a lack of self-control go and vandalize this guy's house now.
