Time for Zippyt to up grade

Yeppers its time for zippyt to upgrade most EVERYTHING !!!
And I would like you guys input ( Please ) .
Dial up SUCKS !!! Cable internet access has recently become avalible so we are thinking about upgradeing ( YAAAAAA !!!! ) ,
BUT cable costs $40 v $20 for dial up ($30 + for the phone line ) , now if'n we do this cable thingee we are talking about doing VoIP ( Internet phone ) , I am SURE some of you have experence with this , so Please some input !!!!
Cost ( for what you get v how much of a hassel it is for service , etc,,, )

We have had sattTV( DirectTV ) for YEARS with a TiVo recever ( TiVo ROCKS !!!!) .
There are HD TiVo recevers out there but they are still expencive,
we have East cost AND West coast local channels ( ABC NBC , etc,,, )
The cool thing ( and we have come to depend on it) is that if we have a schedueling conflict on the East coast we can allways watch ( and TiVo ) the West coast channels ,
Is DirectTV HD worth the cost ??

Soo what do Y'all think ??? does Santa need to come early this year , and if he does will it be worth it ????

I'm guessing DSL is not available or you would have mentioned it as an option too?

I agree with you about the Tivo. We are now on our second DirecTV with Tivo receiver, and it's one of the last ones they sold before moving to their own system. (A friend has the newer non-Tivo one and we all agree it's not as good.) (And when I say it's our second one that's not a knock... the first one lasted almost five years until the hard disk died, and if I had felt like buying a new hard disk instead of taking advantage of promotions on new equipment, it would probably still be going.)

Is the DirecTV HD worth it? I'm not an expert but I think that's highly dependent on your TV. What kind do you have, or maybe, what kind are you willing to buy?

People say that the DirecTV high def is the worst high def product out there because they overcompress the signal until the images are shitty.

I'd do the cable internet and land line phone unless you have good cell phone coverage.
This passed summer, big storm with power out for half a million people, cable (and VoIP) was out for several days but the land lines phone kept chugging along.
Cable internet will give you so many boobies, you'll never regret it.

We went with cable for internet only (we don't watch TV much so it isn't worth it for us) and have been using VoIP for about 4 years now. We do occasionaly have some issues but few and far between. We went with VoIP because most of our family members live in other countires (wife is the only one from her family in this country) and the difference in price between land line and VoIP each month is huge.

The phone company keeps saying that they are testing a booster down in Texas ( For the last 10 YEARS !!) Now fixed wireless IS available , but it is $65 a month , Satt inet access cost about $99 a month with a 3 year contract .

I only know two people who have voip. My experience calling these folks is that voip is not ready for prime time. The sound is always harsh and metallic, and there's always lots of echo.

I don't know if this is true or not (though compression artifacting is always a potential issue for the satellite services), but if you haven't found it yet, http://www.dbsforums.com should give you the good, the bad, and the ugly about it.

Cable Modem

You really want Cable Modem.

DSL is being held back by the phone companies (the corporate DSL is nice with low latency, but the consumer stuff is much slower).

If you want VOIP, I'd try Skype first. They seem to have the best quality of anyone out there. Vonage is not good (too many complaints).

Do you have Comcast out there?

Thanks,

Mitch

I'm not saying you're wrong, but how is the cable company better? For my money this choice has always been the lesser of two pretty bad evils.

A quick look through that dbs forums says people are hatin' DirecTV for HD.

"Today, most people agree that cable and Dish Network both offer more and better HD than DirecTV. That is expected to change over the course of the next year, but at this moment DirecTV is not the strong competitor with HD."

they're better because...

The Phone Company (Verizon), esp. in the case of DSL on the East Coast,is infamous for charging too much for too little.

South Korea has 100Mbit to the house, and they're still pushing 768Kbit DSL for the same price.

Comcast, at least, has provided more bandwidth for the price.
