I guess batons don't meet CARB requirements.

ASP is the manufacturer of the best and finest expandable baton.

It is important to remember one thing about them. A retired police officer said this in my office the other day, "But your honor, I was attempting to subdue the miscreant by striking a fleshy part of his thigh, but he raised his knee as my arm was swinging downward and it was merely an accident that I struck his kneecap and crushed it."

I have the "tactical flashlight," which is otherwise known as a 5 or 6 D-Cell MagLite. Accept no substitutions.

What exactly does "restricted" mean? If it means you can't take it into an airplane or into a courthouse, that seem reasonable. If it means I can't buy it, then that's just crazy.

Restricted in this context means illegal for unauthorized persons to privately purchase and/or to carry the item in public. For instance automatic knives (i.e. switchblades) are illegal for most civilians to purchase and to carry; also, carrying around a knife with a blade over 4" long is illegal in many places although they're legal to purchase.

In other context, it may mean that sales are restricted to only law enforcement; or, other government sanctioned agencies/persons. This can happen whether or not the item is legal for civilians to own and carry in public as the policy stems from liability concerns that the seller may be sued if the item is misused by the buyer. Government contracts often protect the seller from lawsuits if an authorized person misuses the item.

We need to hear from Big Sarge on this one. Although his bailiwick is in Mississippi only, he is likely a good source on the general law enforcement view of such items.

I, personally, find that an inexpensive wooden cane, available at most drugstores, makes a dandy self-defense weapon. It is legal in all jurisdictions, can be carried through a metal detector and is readily available without concealment for instant use. Get training in it's use though. And don't even think of carrying one with a sword hidden in the handle. You can buy a "combat cane" online which is made of heavier gauge wood and has interesting hooks and such built into it. But I spent ten bucks on a basic cane with no combat modifications and no legal problems with it's use and taught a self defense course with it for three years.

I still have it in my closet.

In an interesting coincidence after the talk here about restricted weapons, Maine is legalizing switchblade knives for one-armed people. I love Maine. There aren't too many one armed people in the world, but it's discrimination against them to keep them from being able to have a folding knife they can use.
