I remember the drought of '76 when there were fears we would have to revert to standpipes in the street. As a typical child (a mad mix of ultra-conservative and anarchist) I was really excited about this.

Mum did what we were all told not to do, and filled our two camping water holders with water (aka stockpiling, very naughty) just in case, but it never came to that in the end.

We've had a lot of people in recent years on water butts/ standpipes due to flooding. NOW I realise how inconvenient it is of course.

Would a filter jug work? I'm assuming not. Then again, I almost never drink straight water. Good job it's winter is the only positive I can come up with. At leat you don't have to worry about ice and washing salad etc. I do feel for you though. Don't forget when you brush your teeth! People often get sick on holidays from forgetting that.

Filter pitchers get the stuff that people worry about, but not the stuff that will actually kill you.

In most of the U.S. the filter pitchers are completely unnecessary. They are the result of excellent marketing.

but filter pitchers make the water taste great so people will drink more.

what's a "standpipe?" Is that like a fire hydrant?
