You know that Spaniards, Cubans, and Mexicans all speak the same language right? I suppose you could argue slight dialect variations...

I personally agree that yes, you should learn the language of the country you live in, and in America, that's English (although it most certainly isn't an official language, there is no official language.) And I'm not saying that employers should be required to learn the language of foriegn employees. I just think that it's not THAT absurd to mention the reading requirement for a janitorial position. A little sad maybe, but not absurd.

The fact is that many janitorial positions don't require English, spoken or written. Perhaps you have someone reading the ad to you--how you happened to access the information is irrelevant. They don't want to bother with unqualified applicants, so it's still in their best interest to specify that they don't want applicants who can't read English, since that isn't necessarily a given for a janitorial position.

If this were a position posted for a teacher, or a doctor, or a policeman, I'd agree with you. But a janitor's a janitor, and many people will hire janitors who don't speak English.
