It looks like Gosling and Reed's are ginger beers.

That's a different animal from ginger ale isn't it?

Ginger beer is actually fermented (like beer) but has almost no alcohol. Ginger ale is carbonated water with ginger flavoring. If you get Ginger ale, check the label - some ginger ales (Canada Dry for a while) didn't have any ginger in it (due to public criticism, they now put a token amount of ginger in it - enough to include it in the list of ingredients).

And, yes, ginger beer burns on the way down. Some folks think it helps with digestion (maybe that's why they serve it with sushi).

When I can't keep anything on my stomach, I drink flat ginger ale, and eat saltless saltine crackers.
