It's because it was a hotlink. In the IOtD thread it has to be here if you're not in the site.
Linked pictures are a pain in the ass in old threads, because they are often long gone.

We're having this problem at another site where the discussions are most often technical. People link to someplace their pictures are stored for the moment, or pictures on the web, then in a few months the pictures disappear and the thread becomes useless as a reference.
