Gimmick for sure, something to add to the collection rather than replace anything.
I think it's strictly a gut gun. Somebody tries to rob/assault you, although the laser may give them pause, probably better to wait and stick it in their gut... can't miss. Besides, the chances of its curves matching yours are pretty slim... or in my case, fat.
