Maybe it was just a coincidence that the March 11 train bombings in Madrid came exactly 2 1/2 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.—and, for an added frisson, exactly 911 days after 9/11. Maybe it was a deliberate, harrowing message to the West. Even without this eerie detail, the images of death and destruction in Spain were bound to evoke echoes of America's Sept. 11. For many Americans, though, the solidarity quickly turned to bafflement and even bitterness at the Spanish people's reaction.

Because it’s been widely reported since the beginning, that 90% of the Spaniards opposed the war, but Aznar was still leading (possibly slipping), in the polls, what were the other issues in the election? Is this only about the bombings?

I had stopped looking at information about the bombings a few weeks ago and until I'd read this article I wasn't aware that there had been any coverup of who'd done it.

A question that comes to mind also is how can a guy who was popularly elected do something that is against 90% of the population's wishes. I understand that anything is possible in politics, but how does such a situation arise in a democratic state?

I don't think he was elected on that platform, it evolved while he was in office. Frankly, he can do it fairly easily, just means he probably won't get another term. He didn't do anything that justifies impeachment.

Frankly if I was Spanish I'd be getting seriously fucking pissed off with media calling the election 'appeasement'.

One element of the election I'm aware about is Spain's relationship with the EU which moved significantly and will now mostly move back. The position changed into forming a group against traditional allies like France and Germany for closer ties with Poland and Britain in particular. Another was gay marriage.
