I don't really buy into cats either.
On the dog thing, it's important to remember that man has bred dogs since forever so if you take your time you should be able to match your kids with a breed that has whatever qualities you think will help foster a connection. Some dogs will pester, some will be aloof, others will stay nearby waiting patiently for any scrap of contact.

1) I played the viola in school 1st chair
2) I love to look (sometimes buy) ugly [different] antique ceramics/porcelain 3) I love tools and working on mechanical things 4) When I was 15 I ran away to Florida for a week with a girlfriend. 5) My experience and views on dog breeding and exhibiting have been published in several books and in several languages. 6) My grandfather spent time in a German concentration camp for buying groceries to feed the Jewish families that lived on his street.

On the other hand I've never been all that drawn to horses.
