My biggest triumph as an uncle was when I got my nephew new ball bearings for his skateboard. Apparently he had been telling everyone that it was what he wanted, but everyone was getting him sweaters and books and stuff, because ball bearings are a weird gift. And the little pack of ball bearings actually was so small, it got lost behind the tree, so he didn't find it for a couple days. (I wasn't there.) When it was discovered, he was apparently thrilled. His favorite present.

Of course I never heard any of this from him. No note or anything. But my mom sent me an email.

Get them what they want.

I once asked my friend's son what he wants. He was clueless.

So I gave him what his mom asked, a Best Buy gift card. Anyways, this year I'm going to give him cash. That's right, cash. What adolescent who doesn't need money to hang out with his friends or spend it on whatever he wants, right? hehe.....Well, that's my reasoning.
