You know you could always go for an American Doctor. The U.S. is a huge market and a non-British Doctor would be an exotic choice in Europe.
You want a combination of quirky, intense, humorous, and tragic. My picks would be (in order of preference): Gary Busey Nicholas Cage Steve Buscemi Johnny Depp Has there ever been an Aussie Doctor? Geoffrey Rush would have been great for it about 10 years ago.
