Behold, the recordable eight-track tape.

I still have a portable eight-track player somewhere. Eight D-cells, good thing it had a shoulder strap.

Long ago, my friend would record music on a VHS tape. It held hours of tunes, and during a party, he didn't have to change albums.

I have pretty much my entire library of vinyl and CDs converted to mp3s. The Zings graduation parties were pretty much all day things. I never had to touch the music.

I remember this was a thing that DIY audiophiles did. The VHS tape was very wide and stored a lot of information, so you could get very high quality sound reproduction and also store more music. It was better sound than you could get from a reel to reel machine and far better than you could get on a cassette. But you had to know some electronics to modify your VCR so it only recorded audio over the entire tape instead of using the tape of audio and video.

I bet there's a website somewhere now that explains how it was done.
