My French leaves much to be desired - almost as much as my understanding of Merc when he goes all ditzy on us.

Anyhow, I actually tried to listen to parts of the Prez's job speech - kept getting interrupted by hapless souls wanting to check into the Casa a la Bates. I liked the part about payroll taxes being cut in half for outfits that hire new workers or raise current workers' salaries. Surely, even the 'pubs can't object to that (yes, Merc, I know you will be the exception - you don't even have to tell me in French).

I'm going to bring that up to the owner of this dive, Norman - I mean Bill - when he gets back from his latest jaunt to Cali. This place brings in an incredible $288,000/year. Carmen left the tax reporting forms out once, and I sneaked a read through them. Yeah, those folks in the upper tax percentiles sure create all these wonderful jobs for the rest of us. We get minimum wage no matter what - never any overtime for our 14 hour days, no holiday pay even at Christmas, etc. Yeah, Norman is a real "producer", alright - for himself. The only people who get above minimum wage is the head of housekeeping (I think Norman is afraid of her) and Motel Maintenance Man who pads his accounts. Yet, we're all happy for the work because there is NO work in my remote little town.

And I imagine that a significant percent of workers across the country are working at a lower wage than what they deserve and/or working part time when they need full time work. Maybe that tax reduction thing will help - if the Republicans don't throw temper tantrums and refuse to agree to ANYTHING or even try to come up with an alternative that might fall somewhere within the realm of possibility.
