Interestingly, I read a study awhile back that indicated that people really are more gullible as they age, it's not just a function of the culture/time they grew up in. The part of the brain that detects falsehoods, sarcasm, and nuances like that is one of the earliest to deteriorate in old age. They showed people of increasing age these sets of videos, where actors were playing out a basic scene, but with over-the-top sarcasm and eye-rolling...

Woman: Hey, how are you?
Man: Oh, I'm just great.
Woman: Did you have a good time at the party last night?
Man: Yeah, it was awesome. There were just tons of people there...

The older they were, the more likely they were to say, "Oh yes, the young man had a very nice time at his party." And the parts of the brains that were lighting up in the people who said he obviously had a rotten time weren't lighting up in the old people who were missing it.
