What kind of audio input jacks do you have on the laptop? A stereo input? A mono microphone input?

You need to pre-amplify the turntable signal before sending it to the PC. An old amp with a phono setting will do this, or you can buy a special pre-amp.

When I did it, I ran my old turntable to my old amp the way I always used to, then I plugged an RCA cable into the "tape out" jacks on the amp, and the other end of the RCA cable had a jack that plugged into my PC's audio input. So if you do similar, you would want a cable with RCA connectors on one end and a mic jack on the other.
