Oh that's just not true. The most exciting television, the stuff that's shattering the old rules and laying down new and interesting paths is mostly coming out of the States. Comedy, we do very well. But drama we have lagged far behind. Every two or three years we do something worth picking up on in drama. Apart from period drama, we just don't prioritise it in our tv production any more.

Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, The Wire. They've torn up the rules around episodic television and created a whole new game. They demand more of their audience than ever before. We've got a few submissions like Life on Mars...but tv moves fast and it's a good while since our lot innovated in anything but period and children's drama.
