Your Favorite Fairy Tale

is what? Mine is Hansl and Gretl, hands down. I'm reading a book that explains fairy tales in terms of their most basic message. Sheldon Cashdan, the author of The Witch Must Die, says Hansl and Gretl is basically a moral tale on gluttony. Cinderella is about envy (with plenty of castration anxiety thrown in as a side dish) and Snow White is about narcissism. so. what is your poison apple and why?

The one I wanted to hear again and again was Little Red Riding Hood. I loved it when Neil Gaiman retold the story in the Sandman... |

The Fox and the Hound. Not sure if that counts as a fairy tale or just a Disney story. Anyway, its the first that came to mind.

I don't know if I actually have a favorite. Hansel and Gretel is way up there, though. I generally like the Grimm tales ... I have a relatively new translation of the stories which is much better than the "regular" versions that are best known here in America. There are some really creepy ones. Grimm's Grimmest also puts a very interesting spin on the stories. I remember having a book of the Hans Christian Andersen stories as a child ... scared the cookies out of me. Much better than the Disneyized versions ...

Thanks for the tip. Now I can go be obsessed with Neil Gaiman for awhile. I only just discovered Coraline so I appreciate the history.

My dad always told me that if it rains while the sun is out, the devil is beating his wife. . . . Does that count?

The Tinderbox. I always loved that one. I liked the dogs with the giant eyes. Other favourites: The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor's New Clothes, Rumpelstiltskin and Rapunzel. |

You can buy it in graphic novel form, I wholly recommend it. I think there's about 10 in total. In fact when my ship comes in I'll have to go about doing that myself - I lost my whole Sandman collection (I had the whole run) when I moved to London.

Saying stupid stuff like that in the middle of our lovely, fun threads, is like pooping in the middle of someones nice silk covered bed.
