yeah, brits are more flirty in general, now I think about it. We're totally into double-entendres and americans are not. We even have a phrase in case you look like you don't get it ("as the actress said to the bishop"). here, you say it and spell it out immediately afterwards whether they show signs of getting it or not, and add "just kidding" to make sure there are no hurt feelings......or don't bother to say anything at all.
That is something i miss about the UK (have been giving serious thought to becoming American today)

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Something to think about while American dreaming then I guess. I've never thought we were flirty as a nation. Perhaps it takes the absence to make it noticeable. I'd certainly miss double entendre. Thinking about it, we're just rude really aren't we? ![]() * ETA - Only Fools and Horses! |

lol Only Fools and Horses Christmas special was essential viewing for the nation's families for several years. Far from parents watching it first, three generations of a family would commonly sit to watch that together.
I was thinking about something similar the other day. I was going to post a bit about the new BBC kids' drama, Merlin. I have watched several episodes now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It occurred to me, that I would probably include a warning for American parents that british children's television contains a lot of violence. More specifically, the violence it shows will sometimes be fatal. This show is aired early saturday evening and in the last episode I watched (online, i am out of sync with the tv) the young Prince Arthur kills Sir Valiant with a sword through his gut.[*] Now, I am working on the assumption that american kids shows wouldnt have fatal violence shown, but thats based on nothing more than my own conjecture. I'd be interested to hear an American perspective. [*eta] violence is shown and is quite realistic, but blood is not shown and the actual killing stroke happens off camera, in this case as he is clasped in a hug; we see from the shouders up, but it is very clear what has happened. |

In general, parents here would be much more accepting of the violence than the sexual innuendo. We do have fatal violence, but it depends very heavily on the context. Accidents, and "bad guys" getting killed is much more acceptable than a good guy dying, or worse, a moral quandary in which a good guy kills someone else who might or might not actually be a bad guy. Conflicted protagonists, or antagonists who have somewhat understandable motives, are not common at all in kids' shows.

Yes, what Clod said.
Also, in my experience, it seems most parent's objections to sex, innuendo, and language, is having to deal with the embarrassment of their their child getting in trouble for repeating stuff at school. My sister was pulled aside at drop off one morning because her son had repeated a line from the Simpsons.... something about a porn store. He was admonished for saying it so he then asked what porn was. The "teacher" (a woman with 5 children, some of them college aged) told him it was a bad thing that naughty people do to each other.
