That he left isn't in dispute, thus doesn't need to be proven or disproven. What "we think" can't be "proven" because it isn't a concrete attribute. The actual subject of the sentence is why he left--stated as he left because. "I have proof" ...of what? Of why he left. I have proof he left because we think X. Obvioulsy he doesn't know what we think, but the substitue when determining his motivations would be what he thinks we think. We can't know what he thinks, unless we have a statement by him as confirmation, thus proof of what he thinks about what we think, i.e. why he left. Simple.
