What was the first thing you ever *googled?
The 'history of the cellar' thread made me think back to the very first time I experienced the internet. Believe it or not, I didn't get onto the internet till about 1998 or maybe '99. Dad had put the internet on at his place at my brothers (uni student at the time) urging so I went over to check it out. Dad was raving about all the stuff you could look up and how you could find out the answer to anything you could think of.
So for me, the only thing I could think of at that moment was cloning. It was big in the news at that time, so that's what I looked up. What was the first thing you looked up? *I don't think I actually used google to look up cloning. I don't think it was around then although I can't be sure, but you get the picture. What was the first thing you ever did online (besides look up porn).

The first thing I did was telnet to "coffee house" in 1994. I was a teenager and thought the idea of talking to anonymous strangers was cool. I borrowed a friend's account and logged in as "angelfish."

I don't remember the first thing I googled, but I remember the first time I was introduced to it. It was the winter of 1996. I had been using Prodigy for who knows how long, and a local dial-up BBS for maybe a year. I worked at a Domino's Pizza, and some coworkers-turned-friends there were trying to start up a web design business (called WWWebservers, which we thought was hysterical and pronounced "wuh-wuh-wuh-webservers" behind their backs.) They were showing us their newly rented offices, and the work they were doing for their first client. The graphic artist of the group, Daniel, was raving about how amazing this Google search function was--like, you could type in "shit," and a thousand sites about shit would come up! That was also the first time I ever saw Photoshop. He was raving about that too.

I had a question that I wanted the answer to. What are the different grades of maple syrup, and what do they mean?
Until 1999, the internet could not answer this question. Basic search showed up, but was hobbled by the fact that there is a programming language was called "maple" and all content on the nets was about that, not about syrup. After Google? See for yourself! |

We were on the earlier internet for our region. I remember playing a game called "blanks" and there was this really funny girl named "Snoop" who my husband and I got a kick out of. There wasnt' a whole lot out there at the time. My bad memory precludes me from telling you what year we got the net, will have to ask ex.
I don't remember the first time I saw google, or what I googled. I do know it didn't take me long to fall in love. And a google search made me find the Cellar, fwiw!

Before Google came around, I was a big fan of AltaVista. I have no idea what the first thing that I searched was, probably nude pictures of Cindy Crawford, but what really blew me away was when I was planning a trip to New Zealand in 1996 for 1997, and I was using the internet almost exclusively. We wanted to hike the Milford Track, which requires reservations. All the New Zealand travel books and brochures I could find from traditional sources had no more than a sentence or two with a phone number to call. The internet had a web site that had TONS of information about the hike including maps, pictures, etc. Everything that you would take for granted today. I couldn't find it by going to the library or a book store or a travel agency, but the internet had it all.

My evil ex introduced me to Google. I can't remember what I was using at the time but he sneeringly told me it was rubbish and anyone with any sense used Google.
Funny how I didn't realise he introduced me to anything new in the same way. And yet I bent over backwards to include him in my interests without making him feel ignorant. If it lasts 8 years, can it really be beer goggles? ETA - Glatt I have to concur. I've just booked vouchers for my brother in law's 40th birthday at the pub/ restaurant they eat at most often. This would have been far more complicated even 10 years ago. I admit, finding out where they went involved a call to my Mum - teh interwebz isn't quite that sophisticated yet.

I remember using AltaVista. I haven't thought of that in years.
The first thing I can remember using the internet to research was Vlad the Impaler. Hey, remember sitting there and waiting several minutes for porn videos to load up?
