What I don't get is how 'raising it like a mare' is so much different than 'raising it like a stallion.' I mean, did they give it dolls to play with or something?

I would be interested to see how their medical tests wind up.
I suspect, if the horse actually was a stallion, that the 'surgery' was to remove the testicles. However, most hermaphoditic horses are mares with an enlarged clitoris which can look like a penis poking out the back of a mare's vulva. This would explain why a sheath, penis and testicles were not noticed underneath. Because of this, I think the surgery was to remove, or reduce the size, of the clitoris to prevent any discomfort or infections from blockage while urinating. Many times, these horses also have an overabundance of hormones, which could explain why the horse would get 'excited' around mares.
