Well for one thing, the old TV (NTSC) gets turned on in Feb 2009. You need a digital compatible TV (or a converter box) by then. IOW you want a TV that can support both 1080i and 1080p.

There are (rumored) to be manufacturers that will make a DVD player that is both HD and Blu-Ray compatible. But it has become apparent that the dust has already settled.

When the Toshiba and Sony/Phillips consortiums did this last time, the American computer industry threatened both groups. What resulted was a meeting of only Toshiba and Sony engineers - no lawyers and no MBAs. As a result, the current DVD standard was the best of both technologies.

However the MBAs and lawyers for each side somehow knew they got cheated. These anti-innovators declared they would never let that same mistake happen again.

Toshiba uses a conventional laser diode, wider data tracks, and data compression. Sony uses a more advanced laser diode and narrower data tracks to store more data and without data compression.

The combination of the Sony laser diode and Toshiba compression would create a superior product. But remember who thinks the purpose of a company is its profits - not the product.

Obvious is the format desired by the computer industry. But that will not happen now that MBAs and their lawyers foolishly believe they did not get sufficient profits from the original DVD standard.

The Toshiba standard will be cheaper. The Sony is the superior data storage medium. There is no reason to believe either technology will 'surrender'. And yet both must 'surrender' to have the above suggested better alternative to both.

Currently worry only about the TV since it has been known for almost 10 years ago (when the US choose an inferior standard to protect the domestic TV industry – Zenith) that conventional TV disappears.
