Ya, I agree with SG here. They are only filthy/mean when they are kept in filthy/overcrowded conditions by humans. Otherwise they are clean, intelligent and social.
I'm reading a book right now that has an interesting chapter on (mostly religious) aversion to pigs. The author thinks a lot of it comes from pigs being so similar to humans.

Hitchens is a cool guy...really! Being near DC, if you frequent DC bars enough, you're bound to run into him eventually, and you'll see. He just likes to sell books.
