Expectations don't create responses, but rather influence them.

Living in Arkansas is definate evidence of abduction, though. :-)

From dictionary.com:

Usage Note: Affect and effect have no senses in common. As a verb affect is most commonly used in the sense of “to influence” (how smoking affects health). Effect means “to bring about or execute”: layoffs designed to effect savings. Thus the sentence These measures may affect savings could imply that the measures may reduce savings that have already been realized, whereas These measures may effect savings implies that the measures will cause new savings to come about.
Her sentence is correct if she's saying that the quack will get an unexpected response from a directed question, almost as if she's seeding the randomizer.

Getting back to the HAGS state mentioned upthread, when I was in undergrad anth school, we called it HAPS. I'm trying to remember what the acronym stood for...sorry. Anyway, it is a similar physiological response to specific stimuli that is often mistaken for supernatural interference.

Having experienced a HAGS/HAPS occurence while doing fieldwork, I can attest that it is frightening. Imagine not knowing what you're experiencing or being taught that it was either aliens (or in the case of the people I was studying) voodou loas. Yikes.

Update

Found this today ... research shows that Alien Abuductees suffer stress symptoms similar to those of Vietnam vets ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/...03/2769875.stm

Not surprising ... these people believe that their experiences are real, so symptoms of PTSD could be expected to occur.
