Does he do it because of a ceremonial need to close out the old year and bring in the new by burning the remnants of the negative energies of the old year and surrounding you all with the light of the new while enjoying the libations of earth mother's blood and breath, or does he just like burning stuff?

(this is actually reminiscent of several neopagan and native american formal ceremonies that I've attended. They don't usually serve single malt though. Can I come to yours next year?)
