People say that the DirecTV high def is the worst high def product out there because they overcompress the signal until the images are shitty.

I'd do the cable internet and land line phone unless you have good cell phone coverage.
This passed summer, big storm with power out for half a million people, cable (and VoIP) was out for several days but the land lines phone kept chugging along.
Cable internet will give you so many boobies, you'll never regret it.

We went with cable for internet only (we don't watch TV much so it isn't worth it for us) and have been using VoIP for about 4 years now. We do occasionaly have some issues but few and far between. We went with VoIP because most of our family members live in other countires (wife is the only one from her family in this country) and the difference in price between land line and VoIP each month is huge.

I don't know if this is true or not (though compression artifacting is always a potential issue for the satellite services), but if you haven't found it yet, http://www.dbsforums.com should give you the good, the bad, and the ugly about it.

Cable Modem

You really want Cable Modem.

DSL is being held back by the phone companies (the corporate DSL is nice with low latency, but the consumer stuff is much slower).

If you want VOIP, I'd try Skype first. They seem to have the best quality of anyone out there. Vonage is not good (too many complaints).

Do you have Comcast out there?

Thanks,

Mitch

I'm not saying you're wrong, but how is the cable company better? For my money this choice has always been the lesser of two pretty bad evils.
