How about a little header?

Note the simpson connector in place of jack studs. Brain fart or wise conservation of materials?

Actually, getting the new framing to mate with the old framing was somewhat of an unholy union. But now my walls are a true 8 inches thick.

Alas, with global warming it may be wasted effort.

Also note the 200amp service and the rakish angle of... is that the meter? And the phone/dsl and two copper ground cables which I had to cut to pass through the sheathing. Man you should have seen the sparks when i cut that 200 amp cable!
