Don't despair about not knowing enough about your Dad - the really good ones don't boast about their good deeds. He looks a sincere and friendly man just from the photo (the hair was part of the hat, wasn't it?).

I found it difficult to get my father to speak about his WW2 experiences. I later learned that he spent time in Burma and was captured. Now I can appreciate that most soldiers prefer to forget what they have seen and experienced from that time.

Not easy to know he's gone, but, even though they mey be few, the memories he has left you are beautiful treasures.

Usually the only way to get a handle on war stories is by fading into the woodwork when they commiserate with a fellow vet. When I was a kid in the late 40's/early 50's, I had many opportunities do just that with WW II vets.
Never caught my old man though, he was always aware of me being around.
