OUCH!!! Now that would make a kidney stone feel like a pleasent experience.
 However I think I remember reading somewhere that their spines are soft when they are born, and then within a few hours they harden and then become nasty. All the spins really are is a modified form of hair. Amazing the adaptations nature comes up with.
