Yeah, he's the character you start the story following, if I recall. Made sense that he'd be king, but he should have had some part in the battles.
They abbreviated it so badly. The pin prick death of the winter king and that entire conflict was bologna, and the battle at kings landing made no sense on several levels. Did you notice Aaron Rogers' cameo? And see him trash the finale?
