PS I can't actually *play* that serpent, I was just parping through it. I have an unstarted project planned to get to grips with it. There are no fingering charts for serpents, and especially not for mine which is pretty unusual ...

Perhaps Mr Limey could be of assistance. The absence of charts should not be a problem, since most guys are self taught.

I don't agree, I'd whip right into the next spot. Got to be interesting and probably cool people. A bonus is, if I have trouble with them, not everyone responds to personal threats, usually they will for their kids, but you'll get every musicians attention damn quick if their instrument is in danger.
