not with the epson, the cartridges remember that they are supposed to pretend they are out of ink. The chip resetter erases the data on the chip.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

I suggest this printer.

xoB, your generosity ... wait... I just want to say I find your generosity admirable and entirely in character. Good man.

As to the chips on the cartriges, it's true. I have an (antique) HP officejet d145 and the printer remembers the last three cartridges it's seen. So I keep a refill kit and a stable of four cartriges , black and tricolor. Tedious, but economical. By the way the printer calculates not just how much the cartridges have been used but how old they are as well when determining whether or not a given cartridge is "used up". *sigh*

can't find one. appears that hp carts/chips are not resettable, but, maybe replaceable. looks like big hassle.

ok, my turn - the $40 printer I bought 3 years ago no longer works. The paper feed is now messed up. I may try to see if I can take the back off and look at it, but....

To head off BigV - I don't need it for much, heck I haven't used this one in over 6 months. 90% black and white forms and such.

Thanks Jim - That's what I've basically been doing, but sometimes my kids need stuff for school.
