Suggestions on what printer to buy

Thanks to the generosity of a friend I have been able to pay off my internet bill with a little extra left over. I can add enough to this to come up with around $100.00. Does anyone have a suggestion for a printer/scanner in that price range? It would be nice to find one where you don't have to take out a second mortgage to buy the ink!

Less than $100, Laser, Printers - CNET Reviews

You want a laser printer or you WILL end up spending a fortune on ink.

Unless you get a chip resetter and refill kit.

Chip resetter? The manufacturer actually prevents the device from working even if it has ink in it?!

not to get all tw on youse guys... but don't you think a better first question is "to what purpose will this printer be put?" Pictures? Resumes? Recipes? Email? Color important? Does it need to be shared?

Ok, that's way more than one question. They can't all be first.

What kinds of stuff do you want to print?

We have an HP4500, paid 99.99. It's an inkjet, not a laser printer. All we've ever used is an inkjet, never thought we spent a fortune on ink.

Mostly I want to print documents and forms off the internet as well as personal letters. I will be printing pictures from time to time also. I'd like the pictures to print out properly, but I don't need perfect, artistic quality. I will be the only one using the printer.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! :)

Despite the ink problem that I've now solved, I really like my Espon stylus photo RX 620. It listed for 299 and every couple of months it has a 100 to 150 rebate.

It scans negatives and positives, has a card reader for three diff cards, you can pop in your card reader and it will print out a contact sheet with scantronic ovals below each image. You fill in the ovals for the ones you want to print, scan the contact sheet and it will print out all of your selections.

The downside is the ink bullshit, but the restter is my new favorite thing in the world.

Sam, I have a brand new, never hooked up, in the box, inkjet printer, Dell insisted on sending me, even though I told them I didn't want it, a couple years ago.. Want it?

SamIam 06-25-2010 11:22 PM

Wow! Thank you, Bruce! Are you sure that you don't want it? If you really don't, I'm sure that it would do fine for me. :)

It's on it's way.

My old printer would try to pull the out of ink but not really scam on me too. I discovered that if I removed the cartridges then put them back in, the printer would go ahead and use them after all. Don't know if this trick works on all printers, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
