8/27/2004: Fawn and dog befriend

wolf shares this link telling the story of a fawn, found by a family under their step, seemingly injured and not in good shape. As they nursed it back to health, their dog Hogan, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, befriended it and now sleeps with it. Eventually the fawn will be raised by more experienced friends and sent back into the wild.

How do they know that the dog befriended it as opposed to simply waiting until it is a better meal?

Most dogs will befriend any animal you "introduce" it to. I think they can sense your love or fear, of the critter.
